The children are already quite grown (13 and 15 years old). Is it still worth considering buying or building a house at this stage?

Or would it be better to continue renting and later, when the kids have moved out, buy something more suitable for our age?

We own a plot of land (no building obligation). So far, we live in a rental apartment, which is quite affordable but unfortunately without a garden, which would be nice. Affordable rental houses or apartments with gardens are scarce in the region.

How do you view the issue of houses and children? We are also wondering how large we should build since it is unclear if any child will stay at home or not. This also affects construction costs and future maintenance. We are not very keen on being tenants.

I think the idea is not bad, and the house is designed in a way that keeps it open for future use.

Making a house build dependent on children is, in my opinion, not very practical.
As you already mentioned, it’s about having a garden, possibly more space, and maybe more peace and quiet.
If there are young children involved, that’s great, but it’s not easy to balance everything. Not to mention the financial aspect.
However, if the kids are older, building has its own advantages.
They can better understand the scale of the project and also contribute their opinions. After all, they will eventually inherit the property.
And very importantly, at that age, they can help out and participate.
Regarding the additional rooms that might eventually be unused… it’s best to separate the rooms now with lightweight partition walls that can be removed later. Great for a hobby room or a spacious guest room.
