RamonteHello everyone, I am currently planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen island myself with seating and plenty of storage space, and I am looking for good ideas, tips, and templates.
My goal is to create a kitchen that is both functional and visually appealing. It is especially important to me that the island offers enough drawers and cabinets to store all kitchen utensils, while also including a comfortable seating area for at least two people.
I am working with a footprint of about 180x90 cm (71x35 inches), and I have seen that Metod modules allow quite flexible designs. Perhaps some of you have experience combining different base cabinets and suitable countertops to achieve a comfortable seating height without causing discomfort for those seated?
Which modules work best for storage, and how have you usually designed the seating areas? What types of countertops and stools fit best? I appreciate any ideas, including those related to stability, fixing, and electrical connections.

For plenty of storage space, I recommend base cabinets with full-extension drawers, as they are very practical.
You can create a seating area with a raised countertop, for example using a table leg construction or simply supporting a thick slab underneath.
Stools should have a seat height of about 65cm (26 inches), which works well with standard countertop heights.

Hello Ramonte,
I’m happy to support your project with a brief guide on how to optimally plan an IKEA Metod island with seating and plenty of storage:
1. Check the basics: The standard countertop height is 91cm (36 inches). For seating, the seat height should be around 65cm (26 inches), so the seat surface needs to be a bit lower or the countertop higher.
2. Choose cabinets for storage:
- Drawers with soft-close function provide great convenience,
- tall cabinets or combined base cabinet units can offer more volume.
3. Integrate seating:
- One option is to design the island on the seating side with shorter cabinets or open legroom spaces,
- or plan a raised bar surface that serves as a seating counter.
4. Countertop selection:
- Solid wood or stone-like countertops are more durable and visually appealing,
- adjusting the countertop thickness is important, especially when working with seating heights.
5. Assembly and stability:
- Make sure to connect the units with corner brackets,
- properly support the seating area, e.g., with table legs or reinforced brackets.
6. Electrical planning:
- Plan in advance where outlets should be placed. They are often integrated into side panels or countertop edging.
I recommend thoroughly reviewing each module in the planner beforehand and possibly creating drawings. If you like, I can also suggest example combinations.
Best regards!

Hello Ramonte,
First of all, I really like your idea of building a Metod island with plenty of storage and seating space! This combination can make a kitchen very functional and sociable.
A proven approach is to create the seating area with a slightly overhanging countertop piece, supported on one side by Metod base cabinets and on the other side by table legs. This way, you get deep storage as well as enough legroom.
Regarding the modules, I recommend:
- 60-cm (24-inch) base or drawer cabinets as the main elements,
- 40- or 80-cm (16- or 32-inch) units between them for flexible combinations.
Countertops made of bamboo or solid oak are more expensive but durable and visually appealing.
Pay special attention to properly screwing the modules together and securing the countertop.
For seating, I suggest bar stools with adjustable height for the standard seating height of about 65 cm (26 inches).
And of course, you should consider walkways and spacing during planning to ensure there is enough room when sitting.
Wishing you good luck, and feel free to ask more questions here!

I built my Metod island using base cabinets with shelves and drawers to keep everything organized.
It’s important to adjust the seating height to the countertop; otherwise, it can be uncomfortable.
You can achieve good stability by adding extra angle braces under the countertop.

Therefore, I recommend checking the dimensions on site, including the stools. It is also worth considering the load-bearing capacity of the countertop, especially if it will be used as a seating surface.
Additionally, it can be practical to install only open units or shelves in the seating area to increase legroom.
If it is a corner where electrical outlets are needed, I suggest integrating sockets into the side panel to keep everything neat.
