Hello everyone,

I am planning to build my own kitchen island using the Ikea Metod system and want to incorporate plenty of storage as well as a comfortable seating area. Specifically, I am interested in how to use the modular Metod system to allow for large drawers or pull-outs for pots and pantry items, while also creating a work surface with seating, such as a breakfast bar or a pull-out counter.

Who has experience building kitchen islands with the Metod system and can offer tips on combining storage and seating in a way that is both functional and visually appealing? Are there particular modules or combinations that work especially well?

It would also be helpful to know if it is worth using additional elements like support boards or special countertops to ensure stability when integrating seating into the cabinet structure.

Thank you in advance for your opinions and suggestions!

Hello Cyrill,

I can contribute quite a bit to your project. The Ikea Metod series is quite versatile, but building a kitchen island with an integrated seating area requires careful planning, especially regarding structural stability and the use of space depth.

- Storage: Drawer base cabinets with widths of 60 or 80 cm (24 or 32 inches) are recommended because they are deep enough and remain easily accessible thanks to full-extension runners. Be careful when selecting the internal drawer slides — Metod offers so-called Maximer runners, which make full use of the space.

- Seating area: For seating, worktops with a thickness of 2.8 cm (1.1 inches) are ideal, preferably HPL or solid wood. To support the seating surface, it is advisable to fix the worktop on sturdy metal brackets or wooden battens attached to the side of the cabinet. This helps prevent unwanted sagging or wobbling.

- Additional supports: If seats are to be placed on the side of the kitchen island, sturdy support panels or brackets are very important. You might also add extra support legs under the worktop, especially if it extends beyond the cabinet edge.

- Technology & workmanship: Make sure the worktop surfaces are chosen to withstand daily use (waterproof, heat-resistant). Also, the connection of the Metod elements should be as flush and stable as possible to guarantee a solid and comfortable seating experience.

I would be interested to know the size of your island and the exact room situation — this strongly influences the configuration. Do you have measurements or a design?

I can also offer tips on tools and installation if you’d like.

Hi Cyrill,

I built a Metod kitchen island with large drawers (80cm (31.5 inches)) and an attached bench. It is important to fasten the countertop securely to the wall using sturdy brackets or to support it with extra legs; otherwise, it will be unstable.

You can also stabilize the Metod cabinet boxes themselves well by using cam fittings.

Regarding the seating: a 2.8cm (1.1 inches) thick board is usually sufficient if it is properly supported. You don’t need more than that.

Hey Cyrill, that sounds really exciting! Building a Metod kitchen island yourself is a great DIY project with lots of possibilities!

I think the combination of plenty of storage and a seating area is what really makes a kitchen island practical! 😍

My tip: Use large drawers at the bottom for your pots and pans—they fit well and keep everything within reach. Then you can extend the countertop on one side and create a cool seating area with bar stools. This works great with sturdy brackets and the right countertop.

Keep it up, it’s going to be awesome! If you have any questions, just let me know!
