Hello everyone, I am currently planning to build an Ikea Metod kitchen island myself, but with an integrated seating area. My idea is to combine the sturdiness and storage capacity of the Ikea Metod carcasses with a small dining or breakfast nook, so that you can also sit at the island – basically a kind of breakfast bar or small bistro. Now I am wondering what structural challenges I might face with a DIY project like this, especially regarding stability, the seating height compared to the countertop, and the suitable choice of seating furniture, since the standard Ikea kitchen units are not necessarily designed for this purpose. Does anyone here have experience with a project like this? Are there creative ways to modify or supplement the Metod modules accordingly without having to custom-make everything? I would be particularly interested in advice on how to coordinate the countertop height with a comfortable seating height without causing too much of a level difference. I look forward to your ideas and experiences!

Sounds like a super cozy setup! 😍 The combination of kitchen and seating area has so much charm. I have also set up a Metod island once where one side had a modified countertop for seating. It’s important to pay attention to the right height for the countertop – the standard countertop height is usually about 91 cm (36 inches). For seating, it’s best to use a bar height of around 105 cm (41 inches), which means you’ll need correspondingly taller chairs or bar stools.

A little tip: you can raise the seating surface by adding a frame underneath the countertop without affecting the overall look. This way, the island remains modular, and you can possibly use suitable Ikea bar stools (e.g., from the “Marius” range).

Regarding stability: the Metod carcasses are quite sturdy, but if you extend the countertop or create overhangs, you definitely need to reinforce or support it – for example, with metal brackets or additional legs. Otherwise, it can become wobbly, especially if people lean on it. I hope this helps you a little!

I would like to add a few practical tips—especially regarding the planning and structural implementation when building a Metod kitchen island with an integrated seating area.

- Basically, you should keep in mind that the Ikea Metod carcasses are designed by default for a height of 80 cm (31.5 inches) plus 2.8 cm (1.1 inches) for the countertop, totaling about 82.8 cm (32.6 inches).
- Seating areas, on the other hand, are usually higher; bar stools often sit around 65–75 cm (26–30 inches) high, which requires a seating height of about 105 cm (41 inches) for the countertop.

My suggestion:

1. Frame construction: Build an additional structure under the countertop at the seating area, for example from wooden slats, to raise the seating surface to bar height.
2. Reinforcement: Definitely use sturdy brackets or extra legs under the countertop on the seating side to prevent sagging and wobbling.
3. Countertop choice: You can, for example, use a countertop made of wood or laminate, which is easy to cut and work with—this makes adjusting the height easier.
4. Distance between seating area and cooking area: Make sure to allow at least 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) of legroom for the seated person to sit comfortably without blocking the cabinet.

And very important: consider whether you plan doors or drawers in the seating area—there could be issues with opening them if they are too close to the chairs.

Hope these tips make your project a bit easier!

Countertop at bar height causes stability issues. Reinforce it with metal brackets or additional legs.
Work at a seating height of 105 cm (41 inches), using appropriate bar stools.
Allow about 30 cm (12 inches) of legroom under the countertop.
Avoid drawers that are blocked by the seating area.

I really like your question because I recently worked on a similar modification myself – and yes, it’s challenging, but with some patience, definitely doable.

What helped me was expanding the existing IKEA island with a simple wooden frame, which I painted to match the color. It was important to adjust the seating height by adding an extra wooden board between the cabinet and the countertop. It flows well now, and the island works great as a dining area too.

Sometimes there are concerns that after modifying, some drawers may no longer be accessible or the seating area becomes too tight – it’s better to plan this space generously.

I also noticed that the seating height and countertop height don’t have to be exactly the same – a slight offset often makes it more comfortable and helps prevent muscle strain. The modules are flexible, but you’ll need good tools and sometimes a few more screws than you might expect.

If you want, I can share some measurements that helped me.

Exactly! It’s better to have a bit more room and avoid stressful moments when opening the drawers. I recently saw at a friend’s place that she designed a seating area with stools that can be pushed under the countertop – super practical and visually very clean.

Regarding stability, if you want to build the seating area “floating,” metal brackets are definitely your best option. They are invisible and make the seating area sturdy.

And for anyone who likes a little eye-catcher: lighting under the countertop at the seating area creates atmosphere without disturbing your work. 😉
