ᐅ Bricks and Facing Bricks – Is Weather Resistance Really No Issue?

Hello everyone,

When choosing the exterior facade, the appearance is certainly important – but the functional properties should not be overlooked either. Personally, I find brick/clinker very attractive.

However, there are various types, such as smooth, rough, ribbed, and so on. As a non-expert, I would assume that the smooth versions are more resistant to dirt and similar issues, but is that really the case?

Can anyone share their experience or information from other sources?

So, on our old house, we also used somewhat rough bricks; they have been in place for over 30 years now and have no splash guard at all.

We live in the middle of the forest/in a rural area, and despite that, the bricks are still in good condition, with no moss or similar issues. And if they ever get dirty, a water hose or pressure washer cleans them right up.

For the new house, we again chose rough bricks because we simply like them best and they are very low-maintenance.

Best regards, Tina

I personally prefer rough and somewhat colorful facing bricks over smooth and uniform ones.

I find it tacky to flame bricks with the entire color spectrum of a Scottish kilt, especially when they have a glossy, tile-like finish. Handmade bricks with a "natural range" of color tones, possibly from several batches, seem lively enough to me.

However, I wonder whether the disadvantages might be more important than personal preferences regarding appearance.

In my opinion, choosing a rougher quality facing brick will not be regretted. However, I find it naive how bricks are often equated with "low maintenance" and renders with "get dirty easily," especially when taken to extremes.
