I’ve been reading here for a while but haven’t posted before, so: Hello everyone!

I have a quick question, although it might not be easy to answer. That’s okay; a rough idea is enough for me.

So, I’m planning to buy a bungalow built in 1995 with a basement. Everything about the house is fine, but what’s missing is a direct basement access from the living area. You have to go outside to get down there. This is a deal-breaker for me. My idea is simply to cut a section of the floor on the ground floor and install stairs down. The real estate agent can’t tell me what the floor is made of but suspects concrete.

Does this first floor have a specific structural name?
Could it be made of something other than concrete?
And is it even possible to create an opening about 2 x 1 meters (6.5 x 3.3 feet)? Would this require a specialized company, or can any mason use an angle grinder to do it?

Thanks a lot for your replies!

This kind of work should only be done in cooperation with a structural engineer. Anything else would be unprofessional and unsafe.
