Hello everyone,

I recently viewed a house for purchase and noticed a rather fresh-looking crack in the gable beam of the roof (see picture). The beam itself should be about 300x300 mm (12x12 inches) in cross-section. Without a proper inspection, it’s probably hard to judge, but does this look like it would require a full replacement or just a repair? What rough cost range could be expected? Thanks for your answers.

Cozy attic with central wooden beam and bookshelf full of books under warm lighting.

A carpenter should take a look at this. It might need repairs.

It clearly looks more like a shrinkage crack in solid wood beams. (This is why such material is generally no longer used for this purpose.) Have it repaired by a carpenter.
