Hello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of making my IKEA Billy bookshelf more flexible to use. Specifically, I am looking for a way to borrow individual shelves for the Billy bookshelf – not buy them, as I have limited space and only need extra shelves temporarily. Of course, the bookshelf should remain stable, so a proper fit for the shelves is extremely important to me.
My question to the community is:
Are there any known providers, local or online platforms, where you can specifically borrow Billy bookshelf shelves? Or are there alternative practical solutions you would recommend for flexibly expanding the bookshelf with suitable shelves without having to buy them outright?
I would really appreciate your experiences and tips!

Why not just buy used BILLY shelves from other IKEA users?I have considered that as well. The problem is that I only need the shelves for a very short period—just a few weeks—and after that, I don’t see a use for them anymore. Buying and then throwing away or reselling isn’t really a solution for me.
Are there any models or providers where you can really rent shelves temporarily without having to buy them outright? I haven’t found much information online, so I’m asking here for any concrete experiences.
Wow, this topic really caught my interest! 🙂 The idea of borrowing furniture parts like shelves is very innovative – it would be a great approach to increase sustainability!
If you can’t find any, maybe try asking a friend or acquaintance if they can lend you shelves from their BILLY temporarily. Just asking around in your circle of friends might lead to a solution :-)
Fingers crossed you find something suitable!

Quite a funny idea to borrow shelves; I haven't heard of that before. 🙂
Maybe a flexible system could help, for example stackable boxes or baskets that can be temporarily placed on the shelves. They don’t require fixed shelves and could work as an interim solution.
Otherwise, if it’s just for a short period, you might ask a local workshop if they could make or lend you one or two shelves on short notice. It might cost a bit, but it’s quick and customized.

However, I find the stability and aesthetics of such solutions bothersome – depending on what is stored on the shelf, that could be problematic.
Lenapeo, how important are the exact official BILLY dimensions and the original look to you? If it’s less critical, read here: flexible alternatives could be the best solution.

In your case, the simplest and most cost-effective solution might be to buy a few used shelves and then resell them later through classified ads.
This approach tends to reduce effort and costs more than a complicated rental with potential fees.
