Hello, I’m Andreas from Mindelstetten and I’m new here...

My plan is to build a log plank house.

Since I have very little experience with all the aspects involved — like planning, structural engineering, fire water protection proof, building regulations, zoning plans, etc. — I would like to get some advice here so I don’t look completely clueless.

I already have a building plan: 12 meters (39 feet) long, 6 meters (20 feet) wide, and 5.8 meters (19 feet) high.

1. The foundation is clear: 12 by 6 meters (39 by 20 feet), but how deep should or must it be?

2. What about the roof? What would you recommend? Bitumen? Traditional tiles? Metal/aluminum?

3. Electrical work is not a problem (my brother is a certified electrician and runs a business).

4. Laying the floor is not an issue either since there are three carpenters in the family.

5. Interior finishing shouldn’t be too complicated, or am I mistaken?

6. What kind of heating would be ideal for my house? Underfloor heating or radiators? The heating system itself will be located in the neighboring house.

I hope you can help me with some advice or tips 🙂

Thanks in advance

That depends on the ground conditions; a structural engineer will calculate that for you.

Basically, you have a free choice here — I would initially consider a tile or shingle roof. Keep in mind the structural load, as different roofs have different weights. Another option is photovoltaic panels, either integrated into the roof or mounted on top of it.

That depends on the balance between your skill level, experience, expectations, and time available. In principle, it is all doable.

If you are using an existing heating system (located next to the house), the heating type will be determined by that. I would plan for a central masonry stove — although it requires sufficient space.
