Hello
As the days are getting longer and the nights shorter, we are looking for blackout roller blinds for our windows (140 cm wide and 125 cm high) (55 inches by 49 inches). However, we want a high-end solution because standard roller blinds that you usually find and mount on the wall still let in quite a bit of light on the sides, top, and bottom, so the room remains relatively bright. We are searching for blinds that completely darken the room, where the roller blind is housed in a box mounted to the wall, and the blind slides in side channels also mounted to the wall, ideally with a bottom guide so it is pitch dark. Basically, an interior roller blind designed like an external shutter system.

Our toddler and I both wake up at the first ray of sunlight, which is pretty inconvenient when it’s still "the middle of the night." It’s fine if I’m awake, as I get up and do my morning workout, but my 2-year-old son is quite a handful in those early hours. Also, he has trouble falling asleep if the room isn’t dark enough in the evening.

So far, I haven’t been able to find anything like this. Does anyone have any ideas or tips on where to get something like this without having to make a custom DIY solution? Retrofitting external shutters is out of the question for aesthetic reasons on our facade cladding.

Such blinds (with side rails) are available for direct installation on the window. I’m just not sure if they provide complete blackout at the bottom. We still need to get our blinds for the roof windows—they can be ordered in all sizes.

I found some at Raumtextilienshop de... They have ones built like a roller shutter (but using regular blackout roller fabric) including side guides and a bottom rail. However, one roller blind (with a white backing, 1.45 x 1.40 m (4.8 x 4.6 ft)) costs 250 euros. If you want to equip a whole room with them and absolutely don’t want an external roller shutter on the outside, that’s still reasonable. For us, it would be 4 rooms, so that’s 1000 euros gone.

Therefore, I will try using a regular roller blind and build a box from laminate panels, adding suitable side guide rails/bottom rails and attaching a windowsill strip to improve sealing. Hopefully, that will work =) It’s still too cold for gardening anyway.
