ᐅ Black spots on the floor beneath protective covering – vinegar smell

Hello everyone

As I mentioned in another thread, I am moving out of a rental apartment. Now something else has come to my attention and I need your advice.

When I first moved in as the original tenant, I placed a plastic mat from Ikea under my office chair to protect the floor from the chair's wheels. Today I picked it up, probably for the second time in three years, and I noticed a strong smell of vinegar, like I had just opened a vinegar jar. The floor where this protective mat was—specifically in a circular area where the chair was mostly positioned—now has black spots on the parquet/laminate floor (not sure which it is...).

The spots cannot be wiped off, and when you run your hand over them, you can’t feel anything.

What is this? Is there any way to remove it?

Thanks for your help.

Regards

Now the only question is whether I should have known this and can be held responsible, or if they installed the flooring too early.
It’s difficult. As a homeowner, you know that there is still residual moisture in the screed that needs to evaporate. As a tenant, you probably don’t. But that doesn’t really matter. You unintentionally “damaged” the floor. Try to claim it through your insurance; otherwise, it will be deducted from your security deposit. You will have to cover the repair costs one way or another, unless your landlord doesn’t mind.

We are moving out in two weeks, and after seven years, we have left some marks in the apartment as well. I expect everything to be settled from our security deposit.
