Hello everyone

As I mentioned in another thread, I am moving out of a rental apartment. Now something else has come to my attention and I need your advice.

When I first moved in as the original tenant, I placed a plastic mat from Ikea under my office chair to protect the floor from the chair's wheels. Today I picked it up, probably for the second time in three years, and I noticed a strong smell of vinegar, like I had just opened a vinegar jar. The floor where this protective mat was—specifically in a circular area where the chair was mostly positioned—now has black spots on the parquet/laminate floor (not sure which it is...).

The spots cannot be wiped off, and when you run your hand over them, you can’t feel anything.

What is this? Is there any way to remove it?

Thanks for your help.

Try using acetone

It looks like there was water underneath. It appears to be mold stains. Didn’t you remove the piece while cleaning and make sure to dry everything thoroughly?

Hello everyone

Thank you for the responses. I have now gotten some acetone, but unfortunately, it didn’t help.

Well, it’s a bachelor pad. I may have absorbed moisture in maybe three small spots. Otherwise, my robot vacuum cleaner took care of everything. And yes, it looked good.

My dad said that it might be due to the construction, since I moved in right away and there might still have been moisture inside that couldn’t evaporate.

That was certain.

Now the only question is whether I should have known this and can therefore be held responsible, or if they installed the floor too early.
