Hello everyone,

We are planning the renovation of a house built in 1955.
The walls are made of 24cm (9.5 inches) pumice hollow blocks.
In the 1970s, an additional 5cm (2 inches) of polystyrene insulation was added.

The facade definitely needs to be renewed. There has been woodpecker damage, and in some areas the polystyrene is visible (see pictures).

The question is what we should do:
1) Leave it as is, just repair and repaint
2) Remove the polystyrene and install new insulation
3) Add extra insulation and a new facade directly on top of the current facade

Of course, option 1 would be the cheapest. The question is whether 5cm (2 inches) of insulation is sufficient and durable in the long term, or if it’s better to invest around 25,000 euros and renew everything at once.

Currently, the house does not have any mold or similar issues.
