Hello everyone, I have an issue with my Billy bookshelf where the shelves noticeably sag after a relatively short time and under load. I am particularly interested in understanding the typical causes of this problem. I have tested the shelf with various weights, including evenly distributed loads, but I still see significant sagging, especially in the middle of the shelves. Could this be due to material defects, incorrect assembly, overloading, or perhaps the design? I look forward to your insights and experiences!

Do you perhaps have particularly heavy items?

Good point. Often underestimated are loads such as file folders, large books, or heavy equipment. Especially if they are not well distributed, they create significant stress in the middle of the shelves.

Also, if possible, check whether the shelves are still level and that no brackets have been installed at an angle. Improper installation further weakens the shelving unit.

Additionally, it can be said: The load capacity is stated in the manual. It is often exceeded. If you load it much more than the device is designed for, you will see sagging.

If necessary, simply add supports or choose different flooring.

Thank you for the many helpful answers, especially for the clear breakdown, Sepele!
I have now examined the load more closely. Indeed, there was quite a bit of weight on the shelf in some areas, particularly several thick encyclopedias and heavy binders concentrated in the middle of the shelf.
The assembly was done according to the instructions; however, I have not yet added any additional supports to the shelves.
I will now try reinforcing the shelves with a second wooden board or metal brackets and distribute the load more evenly.
Thanks also for the reminder about moisture, which can fluctuate in our apartment; I will keep an eye on that as well.
Let’s see how things hold up after these measures.
