Hello everyone,
I am planning to get a Billy bookshelf with glass doors and, of course, I am aiming for a solution that is as durable and secure as possible. However, I wonder what common issues might arise with the glass doors on Billy bookshelves. For example, are there any known difficulties during installation, potential damage to the glass panels, or problems related to durability and maintenance? I am also curious if the glass tends to scratch easily or if the hardware often requires readjustment. Details like these would be very helpful for me to better assess whether it’s worth it or if I should consider an alternative option.
Thank you in advance for your insights and experiences!

Exactly, I can confirm that! 🙂
It’s amazing how much charm a simple BILLY shelf unit with glass doors can have. At first, the hinges were a bit stiff for me too, but after a few days of use, everything opened and closed very smoothly. Since then, it’s been a pleasure to use.
A tip from me: clean the glass surfaces with a microfiber cloth and a mild glass cleaner to keep them clear and scratch-free for a long time. This way, you avoid any problems!
You’ll see, it works great, and the look is really eye-catching!

A bit of humor is definitely allowed here. 😉
You could almost call this the IKEA paradox: it looks great, but technically it can be a bit "quirky"! 🙂
But seriously, if you install the doors correctly and don’t try to put ten kilograms (about 22 pounds) of books on the shelf attached to the glass front, it will hold up without any problems. Glass is fragile, but with the right handling, it can withstand the small challenges of everyday use.
My advice: stay calm during installation, be patient (and maybe get a helper). Then the BILLY with glass fronts will be really enjoyable – guaranteed! 😉

Quickly returning to the installation: the varying reports about durability and issues with the hinges make me cautious.
Does anyone happen to have reliable data on the screws or parts included with the glass fronts?
That's certainly good advice, but to me, it also sounds like the quality of the fasteners and the doors themselves might be a weak point, which may not be well documented by IKEA.
I'm considering whether it's worth using alternative fittings or accessories designed specifically for glass fronts to prevent adjustments and damage. Has anyone had experience with that?
