Hello everyone, I am considering upgrading my IKEA Billy bookshelf to improve its functionality and stability. Specifically, I’m interested in solutions for better wall mounting options, additional shelves with higher load capacity, and possibly integrated LED lighting for the compartments. I am mainly focused on enhancing flexible use without compromising the shelf’s stability or appearance. Does anyone have experience with such upgrades and can offer advice on what is really worthwhile? What materials or products have proven effective, and how can common mistakes be avoided during retrofitting? Thanks in advance!

Hello Bibobu, your plan sounds well thought out. I would like to add something about wall mounting: it is very helpful to check the wall’s load-bearing capacity beforehand. Sometimes drywall without a supporting frame can be weak, so additional reinforcement may be necessary.

Regarding the LED lighting: consider linking the lighting to a motion sensor – this increases convenience and saves energy.

I am interested to know exactly what type of wall you have and what the load requirements of your intended use are?

I think this is crucial, because without this information much remains speculation. Perhaps you can provide more details about what exactly you plan to store?

For stability: use metal brackets and stronger anchors. LEDs are simply self-adhesive strips, ideally with a power supply. Make sure to keep the wiring tidy. This way, everything stays neat and safe.

Is it really worth it for a BILLY shelf?

That really depends on the intended use. If you only need storage for books or files, lighting isn’t necessary. However, if you want to use the shelf as a display case for decorations or collectibles, LED lighting can definitely be worthwhile.

Consider whether you want to connect the lighting to a motion sensor

A good tip that many forget—motion sensors or even a smart home solution can add a lot of convenience here.

For wall mounting, I recommend using special metal cavity anchors for drywall, which prevent the load from resting solely on the drywall paper. This is an inexpensive but often underestimated step for added safety.

And Bibobu, if you like, I can gladly send you a construction guide on how to properly install everything step by step. Just let me know.
