Hello everyone, I’m planning to assemble my first Billy bookcase from IKEA soon and would like to gather some tips on what beginners should definitely avoid.
I understand the basics, but there are some details that are easy to overlook, such as stabilization, weight limits, or the best approach to assembling it.
What common mistakes have you or other users encountered that might not be obvious without experience? Are there any tips or recommendations to help build the bookcase so that it remains stable, safe, and durable over time?
I look forward to your insights and advice!

From my own experience: Avoid placing the BILLY shelf flush against the wall at the back without securing it. It may seem stable but can tip over easily. I also tried using cheap wall anchors, which turned out to be a bad idea.
Also, make sure to sort all parts and carefully check them against the instructions before starting assembly. Mistakes often happen when you start building right away without having all screws and panels prepared.

Don’t place the shelf permanently on carpeted flooringThat’s true – carpet can cause the shelf to wobble because the surface isn’t completely stable. Alternatively, you can put small rubber pads under the shelf feet to improve grip and also protect the floor. My tip: Be patient during assembly and follow the instructions carefully. This helps avoid most beginner mistakes and ensures long-lasting stability :-)
