Hello everyone, I’m planning to assemble my first Billy bookcase from IKEA soon and would like to gather some tips on what beginners should definitely avoid.

I understand the basics, but there are some details that are easy to overlook, such as stabilization, weight limits, or the best approach to assembling it.

What common mistakes have you or other users encountered that might not be obvious without experience? Are there any tips or recommendations to help build the bookcase so that it remains stable, safe, and durable over time?

I look forward to your insights and advice!

Hello HUDSON, first of all, great topic! There are actually a few points about the BILLY shelf that are often overlooked, especially by first-time users.

First: Don’t underestimate wall anchoring! Many people simply place the shelf freestanding, but especially with taller shelves, securing it to the wall is essential to prevent tipping. This is particularly important if there are children in the household, as it can be a safety hazard.

Second: Pay attention to the load limits. IKEA provides recommendations for the maximum load per shelf, and these should not be ignored to avoid deformation.

Third: Make sure to properly fix the back panel. The narrow MDF board gives the shelf its stability – if it’s not correctly installed, everything will wobble.

I also recommend always working on a level surface to prevent unevenness later on.

If you want, I can also provide tips on tools or assembly.

Wall mounting is mandatory, regardless of how sturdy the shelf appears. Avoid cheap anchors; use ones suitable for your wall type. Align the back panel precisely, otherwise it will wobble.

A quick step-by-step overview of what to definitely avoid with the BILLY shelf:

1. Do not use no wall attachment or an insecure fixing method.
2. Avoid overloaded shelves, especially thinner shelves carrying heavy weight.
3. Not securing the back panel properly – a misaligned back panel causes instability.
4. Do not screw in screws partially or overtighten them, as this can damage the material.
5. Uneven floor surface – the shelf must stand completely level; otherwise, it may tip over or put stress on the screws.

Following these five points puts you well on your way to a secure shelf.

I can only confirm that this is often the cause of accidents. Make sure to use wall plugs suitable for your wall type!

Additionally: When attaching the shelf to the wall, always use a spirit level and carefully mark the fixing points to ensure the shelf sits perfectly straight.

Good morning, I want to add an important point about weight: Many people overload the shelves with heavy books or objects, especially if they don’t have proper shelving boards with metal reinforcements.

A common mistake is assuming the shelf can hold more than specified just because it looks sturdy. IKEA provides a maximum load per shelf, which should not be exceeded, otherwise the shelves may sag or break.

This is often underestimated. I also recommend storing heavy books on the lower shelves and lighter items on top.

Additionally: If you use snap fittings or plastic clips, check them carefully before assembly. Sometimes they are not completely new or may be defective, which can reduce stability.

Hello HUDSON,

I would like to add some advice regarding the assembly process itself: avoid just quickly screwing everything together! Especially the doors (if you have a BILLY shelf with doors) require precise adjustment. Otherwise, they won’t close properly, which not only looks bad but also puts long-term stress on the hinges.

I can only emphasize that. An uneven floor can lead to crooked assembly, which may cause tilting or stress issues later on.

Additionally: always use the correct tool when tightening screws, usually an Allen key. Tightening screws carelessly can damage the material.

Good luck!
