Hello everyone, I recently bought a Billy bookcase with a smooth finish from IKEA and am now wondering how to clean it best without damaging the surface. I am particularly interested in which cleaning products and methods I should definitely avoid because they might cause scratches, discoloration, or other damage. Does anyone have tips or experience on how to care for such a smooth, coated surface? I am mainly concerned with long-term maintenance, especially what not to do to prevent damage over time.

Definitely avoid using abrasive cleaners Don’t you think that completely avoiding abrasive cleaners can sometimes be a bit excessive? If you are very gentle and avoid scrubbing too hard, it is possible to clean carefully.
However, I agree that harsh chemicals are absolutely out of the question, but I also believe that people should be trusted to use materials deliberately and cautiously.
It would also be interesting if anyone has experience with special furniture care wipes for melamine-coated surfaces – perhaps they offer more than just water and dish soap.

Honestly, I’ve never had problems with scratches or dull spots. The key is really not to use too much water and to dry the surface afterwards.
I avoid aggressive cleaners completely because I’m worried they could damage the finish. It’s also about protecting the surface in the long run. Thanks to everyone for the helpful tips here!
