Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the following problem: I am assembling a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and noticed that the screws supplied for the back panel are significantly too long. Specifically, the screws stick out so much on the back side during assembly that I am worried they might damage the wall or floor when I try to secure the bookshelf to the wall.

My question is: How do you handle it when the screws in the Billy bookshelf are too long? Are there proven and safe ways to shorten or replace them without compromising stability?

I have already considered switching to shorter replacement screws but do not want to make any mistakes regarding safety. Maybe someone here has experience or tips that could help.

Thanks in advance!

Why insist on using the original screws at all? IKEA is known for using standard parts that aren’t always ideal for every situation.

My point is: you can easily replace the screws with more suitable ones. This often results in better stability since the originals tend to be rather low quality. Why not go for higher quality materials or screws of specifically adjusted lengths?

Avoid cutting screws yourself with pliers or a saw

I agree, but why not get creative if you have the right tools? Shortening screws a bit isn’t tricky—as long as you’re careful not to damage the threads. In general, I favor custom solutions over rigidly sticking to what comes in the package.

Hello everyone,

I would like to share my experience as well: I am very familiar with the issue of screws being too long, especially with BILLY shelves, which are often mounted on back panels of varying thickness.

Here is my approach:

1. First, measure and compare the length of the screws.
2. Buy replacement screws of the required length and comparable strength at the hardware store. The thickness should be the same to maintain stability.
3. Important: The screws should be suitable for wood or particleboard, not metal thread screws.
4. For back panels, it is advisable to avoid using screws that are too long, as this can damage the bracket.

Additionally, I have found it helpful to test the shelf shortly after completing the assembly to ensure it is firmly in place and no corners are loose before finalizing everything.

This way, you can solve the problem reliably and effectively.

To complement a practical solution:

The screw length for shelves like BILLY is designed to provide secure fastening without protruding through the material.

If screws stick out, it usually means the wrong screws were chosen or the installation was done incorrectly. The best approach is:

- Measure the required screw length (material thickness + insertion depth).
- Purchase replacement screws at the hardware store or specialist supplier with the same diameter and thread type in the correct length.
- Avoid using screw cutters unless you have the proper tools.

In addition, wall fixing requires separate plugs and screws, which must not be confused with the shelf screws.

A professional approach prevents damage to the shelf and ensures long-lasting stability.

You can definitely replace the screws with more suitable ones.

That’s an interesting idea, thanks! I always want a secure solution and was worried that the shelf might not be as stable then.

So, tomorrow I’ll go to the hardware store to get advice and take some samples with me to find the right length and thickness.

I will definitely check that again. Thanks for the tip!

It’s reassuring that so many here know the same problem and have solved it with replacement screws. Thanks for your detailed posts—I’ll update you once I make progress.
