Hello everyone,

I recently tried assembling a Billy bookshelf from IKEA, but I found the included instructions difficult to understand. In particular, I struggled with the lack of clear markings on the individual parts and the absence of unambiguous guidance on the correct orientation of the side panels and back panel. Additionally, some steps are presented in a very abstract way, which made me pause frequently to make sure I was assembling everything correctly.

Has anyone here had experience assembling the BILLY bookshelf and can offer specific tips on how to interpret the instructions more effectively? Are there alternative resources available, such as online videos, photos, or step-by-step guides that make the assembly easier? I would really appreciate practical advice, especially regarding common mistakes and how to avoid them early on.

Thanks in advance!

I would like to add a note about the working environment. For assembling the BILLY shelf, it is recommended to have plenty of space and a clear organization of the parts. Additionally, I always use a spirit level to align the side panels precisely – especially with larger models, this prevents the shelf from being unstable.

The instructions should definitely be followed step by step, without shortcuts. It may sound obvious, but fastening parts too early makes later adjustments more difficult.

If the instructions are confusing, I recommend sorting the screws in advance.

It also helps to follow the order precisely and not skip any steps.

Sometimes it is better not to tighten everything too much during the initial assembly in case you need to make adjustments later.

Typical mistakes are confusing screw lengths and twisting the back panel

Thank you for this precise list; these are exactly the points I was uncertain about.

I will definitely follow this advice, as stability was somewhat lacking in my last attempt.

I am also interested in whether it is recommended to use additional tools such as power drills or torque-limiting screwdrivers to avoid damage from overtightening?

Furthermore, I would appreciate any tips on how to find the correct positioning, especially for the metal rails for the shelves – I found the instructions the hardest to follow here.
