Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy bookcase from IKEA to place on my balcony. However, I am concerned about its durability and suitability in changing weather conditions, especially with moisture or wetness on the balcony, such as rain or dew.
My question: Is it generally advisable to use a Billy bookcase permanently in moist conditions on a balcony, or is it probably only a matter of time before water damage appears, like swollen boards or warping?
I have also considered whether an appropriate sealant or additional protection might help. Has anyone had experience with the Billy bookcase under such conditions? Or maybe tips on how I can better protect the bookcase to make it last longer?
Thank you in advance for your insights and advice!

Billy shelves are not designed for outdoor use. Particle board will swell when exposed to moisture.\Thanks for the clear advice! I think I won’t leave the shelf exposed to rain permanently.

Proper ventilation is essential to allow moisture to escape.\That’s interesting. I installed a wooden slatted floor on the balcony – so there should at least be some air circulation.
Do you think a combination of waterproofing treatment, a canopy, and ventilation could make the Billy shelf somewhat suitable for the balcony, provided it doesn’t have constant water exposure? Or is the wood-based material simply too sensitive for that?
