Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy bookcase from IKEA to place on my balcony. However, I am concerned about its durability and suitability in changing weather conditions, especially with moisture or wetness on the balcony, such as rain or dew.
My question: Is it generally advisable to use a Billy bookcase permanently in moist conditions on a balcony, or is it probably only a matter of time before water damage appears, like swollen boards or warping?
I have also considered whether an appropriate sealant or additional protection might help. Has anyone had experience with the Billy bookcase under such conditions? Or maybe tips on how I can better protect the bookcase to make it last longer?
Thank you in advance for your insights and advice!

The panels are made of particleboard with a foil layer – as soon as moisture gets in, the wood swells and the shelf loses stability.
But hey, you could try applying a good wood preservative or cover it with a waterproof tarp when it rains. That might give you a few more years! I once tried something similar, and with protection it worked reasonably well. So don’t give up, it’s possible!

Or maybe some tips on how to better protect the shelf to make it last longer? The Billy shelf is mainly made of veneered particleboard, which does not tolerate moisture well. Prolonged exposure to moisture inevitably causes swelling and deformation. Without proper protection, its durability outdoors is significantly limited.
It is advisable to place it in sheltered areas protected from rain and to treat it with specialized wood preservatives or water-repellent coatings. Alternatively, shelves made of metal or solid wood with appropriate treatment are better suited for outdoor use.

Billy shelves are unfortunately not designed for moistureThat is correct. Furniture like the Billy shelf is made from particleboard, which quickly swells and delaminates when exposed to moisture.
For outdoor use, weather-resistant materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, or specially treated solid wood are recommended. Applying a protective treatment to a Billy shelf may help temporarily, but long-term deterioration is to be expected.
To prevent moisture damage, the shelf should also be protected from direct rain and dew—such as with a roof or waterproof covers. Regular inspection and maintenance will further extend its lifespan.

Proper ventilation is also essential to allow moisture to escape.
Otherwise, outdoor furniture made from more durable materials is more economical in the long run.
