Hello everyone, I have a specific problem with my IKEA Billy shelves—the doors are sticking at the hinges. This means when I open or close them, the door doesn’t move smoothly but either gets stuck or moves with difficulty. I’m interested in understanding what might cause the hinges on Billy shelves to stick. Could it be due to incorrect installation, material fatigue, or are the hinges by design prone to this kind of issue? Also, I would like to know which practical tips or steps you would recommend to fix this as quickly and permanently as possible. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!
Hey, I had exactly the same problem a few weeks ago – the hinges were really stuck, and the doors were hard to open. The good news: with some WD-40 and careful readjustment, it was fixed in 10 minutes!
Great tip: Don’t tighten the screws too much, as this can warp the material. There always needs to be a little movement so the door can swing freely 🙂 So keep at it, it’s worth it!

Also: Has anyone done a long-term test – do the hinges keep working better over time, or is this only a short-term fix?

Has anyone done a long-term test – do the hinges run smoothly over time, or is this just a short-term fix?I have several BILLY shelves in use where I have been lubricating the hinges for years with a good, drying silicone grease. This removes grease from the metal parts and prevents rust and sticking in the long run. WD-40 is more of a cleaner and short-term rust remover, but not a lasting lubricant.
A few more tips for adjustment: The hinges can usually be adjusted in three directions (height, depth, sideways). If the door sticks, the sideways adjustment can reduce pressure at the contact point. Have you tried this function yet?

- Ensure screws are securely tightened
- Remove the door if necessary and clean it thoroughly
- Inspect the hinge mechanism for foreign objects
- Use good lubricants (silicone grease recommended, avoid WD-40 as a long-term solution)
- Align the hinges correctly, including using lateral adjustment
This worked well for me and also extended the lifespan of the door.
