Hello everyone, I have a specific problem with my IKEA Billy shelves—the doors are sticking at the hinges. This means when I open or close them, the door doesn’t move smoothly but either gets stuck or moves with difficulty. I’m interested in understanding what might cause the hinges on Billy shelves to stick. Could it be due to incorrect installation, material fatigue, or are the hinges by design prone to this kind of issue? Also, I would like to know which practical tips or steps you would recommend to fix this as quickly and permanently as possible. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

Often, problems occur because the screws are not tightened properly or the hinges are not correctly aligned. First, check if the screws are loose and tighten them if necessary. Then adjust the door until the gaps are even.

That is certainly a good first step, but I think material fatigue or manufacturing defects should not be ruled out. Especially with more affordable BILLY shelves, the hinges could be made from lower-quality metal that may bend or rust over time. Has anyone had experience with whether the model year or production date makes a difference? Maybe there are also updated designs that are less prone to these issues?

Here are a few details to keep in mind: Typically, the hinge on BILLY shelves is a simple clip-top or push-open hinge, usually made of stamped metal with a spring mechanism. If binding occurs, there are two main causes:

1. Installation error: If the hinge is not precisely positioned on the drill holes, pressure or misalignment can occur, restricting the movement.

2. Dirt or foreign objects in the mechanism: Wood dust, small debris, or resin can block the joint.

3. Metal fatigue or deformation: Although rare, if the furniture is older or placed on a damp surface, rust may impair function.

Practically, I recommend the following steps:
- Remove the doors to inspect the hinges without weight.
- Clean the hinges thoroughly with a cloth and, if necessary, some isopropanol.
- Check the alignment of the hinges on the side panels by examining the screw positions.
- Tighten the screws moderately, avoiding over-tightening to prevent damage to the material.
- In case of rust, apply some WD-40 or a similar lubricant into the joint and move the hinges back and forth several times to restore smooth operation.

If this does not help, it may be worth considering purchasing and replacing the hinges.

That sounds very reasonable – I hadn’t taken the doors off yet because I was afraid of misaligning them. Does the door’s adjustment remain stable after removing and reattaching it? Is there a trick to positioning the doors when reinstalling to avoid shifting anything?

Also: What tools are needed? Are standard screwdrivers sufficient, or should you use specific bits? The screws look somewhat special.

Typically, the screws used for BILLY shelves are Phillips head (PH2). A standard Phillips screwdriver is usually sufficient.

The issue with misalignment after reinstallation is known – the hinges have a type of spring clip that holds the position quite accurately when the door is properly fitted. My advice: First, gently place the door so the pins snap into the hinge slots, then carefully tighten the screws while making any necessary adjustments.

Also, when retightening the screws, be careful to turn them only moderately to avoid enlarging the holes. This is especially important with the particleboard used in BILLY shelves.
