Hello everyone, I noticed that the door hinges on my Billy shelf rattle with every movement. The noise is quite annoying and unfortunately spoils the otherwise high-quality impression. I suspect that the hinges might not be properly secured or that some plastic parts could be worn out. Has anyone had experience with reliably fixing this rattling? Is it enough to tighten the screws, or do the hinges need to be replaced? Are there any special lubricants or damping inserts that can be used without damaging the shelf? I would appreciate any helpful tips, including common causes or recommended tools. Thanks in advance!
I doubt that simply tightening the screws is always the most effective solution. Often, the problem is structural: the connection between the hinge block and the shelf material in BILLY shelves is made of relatively thin particleboard. If the thread in the wood has already been stripped, the screws slip, and any movement causes rattling. Without inserting wooden or plastic dowels to reinforce the screw hole, the problem cannot be permanently fixed. Therefore, I recommend checking the screw holes and, if necessary, repairing them with wood filler or wooden strips before reattaching the hinges. This will save frustration in the long run.

Additionally, small wooden shims behind the hinge can be used to increase the surface area for better screw fixation. Checking the door height is also relevant, as sometimes incorrect alignment causes stresses that lead to rattling. A well-adjusted hinge eliminates many mechanical noises.
In summary, the procedure for dealing with noisy BILLY hinges is as follows:
- Tighten the screws,
- Check the hinges for damage,
- If necessary, reinforce the wood behind the screws,
- Lubricate the hinges with silicone spray,
- Adjust and position the door,
- Last resort: replace the hinges.
This should usually resolve the problem well. Thanks to everyone for the additional input!
