Hello everyone,
I’ve noticed that the drawers of my BILLY shelving unit squeak quite a bit when I open or close them. The noises mainly come from the sliding rails or the wooden edges. I’ve already tried lubricating them with some oil, but I’m not sure if that’s the right choice since I don’t want to use something that could damage the sliding surfaces or become sticky.
Does anyone have experience with what really helps when BILLY shelving drawers squeak? What products or methods are recommended that won’t affect the mechanics or the material? Are there any specific tips for the BILLY model from IKEA, or is squeaky drawers a common issue with wooden shelves in general?
Looking forward to your advice!

You can carefully remove the drawers along with the rails and clean them with a slightly damp cloth and some dish soap before applying the spray.
If the guide rails are indeed metal, graphite powder or special dry lubricants are also good options—they don’t squeak and don’t attract dirt.
If you’re referring to wooden edges on your BILLY shelf unit, a thin layer of wax might help, for example, rubbing furniture wax or a candle lightly over the edges. Sometimes the squeaking results from wood rubbing against wood. It’s important not to apply too much, or it may cause sticking.
Have you checked if the drawers might be warped? That can also cause unusual noises.

However, I think it’s important to question why the drawers are squeaking in the first place. Usually, it’s due to poor fit or material wear. Using lubricants only masks the symptoms but doesn’t address the root cause.
A professional adjustment of the sliding paths can help, or carefully sanding down minimal burrs on the wooden edges. Question: Could the shelf have absorbed moisture somewhere, causing the wood to warp? This can happen with IKEA products due to the particleboard used.
Therefore, I would recommend thoroughly checking the drawers mechanically before applying anything, and if in doubt, contacting IKEA directly if it’s a quality issue.

I once polished the edges of my BILLY shelves with an old piece of candle wax – it was cheap and significantly reduced the squeaking. You just have to be careful not to rub too hard, or it might look a bit untidy afterwards.
Give that a try; it might be easier than buying something expensive right away!
