Hello everyone,
I noticed that the drawers of my BILLY shelf from IKEA squeak when pulling them out and pushing them back in. The noise is quite annoying, especially since it happens with all three drawers.
I suspect the issue might be with the sliding rails, but I have no idea how to fix it without damaging the parts or affecting their functionality.
Has anyone had experience with this problem? What steps would you recommend to eliminate this squeaking? I am especially interested in environmentally friendly and durable solutions, as I have found silicone spray to be quite prone to attracting dirt so far.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello dunumeo,
It’s great that you described your issue so clearly. Squeaking in BILLY drawers usually occurs due to insufficient lubrication of the metal or plastic runners or from dirt buildup on the sliding components.
Here is my step-by-step guide to fix it:
1. Remove the drawers completely and thoroughly clean the runners – preferably with a lint-free cloth and a mild cleaning agent. Avoid harsh chemicals.
2. Check for small foreign objects (dust, crumbs) stuck in the runners and remove them.
3. For lubrication, I recommend either a dry lubricant based on graphite or a PTFE spray. These are less prone to attracting dirt than silicone spray and last longer.
4. Apply the lubricant sparingly to the moving parts of the runners – especially the ball bearings and sliding elements.
5. Reinsert the drawer and open and close it gently several times to distribute the lubricant.
Summary: Clean, remove foreign objects, treat with a suitable lubricant. This should stop the squeaking.
If the problem persists despite these steps, the runners or ball bearings may be worn, in which case replacement is recommended.
Good luck!

I am particularly interested in environmentally friendly and durable methods,To add to taudis’ explanation, I would like to point out that the runners of BILLY drawers are usually made of plain metal with plastic components.
The cause of squeaking often results from friction between metal and plastic, caused by missing or hardened lubricants.
Regarding environmental friendliness, I recommend a biodegradable dry lubricant (e.g., based on plant oils with solids like graphite or PTFE), as these are not only low-odor but also do not attract dust, which can cause deposits over time.
Usage tips:
- Thoroughly clean and dry the runners before applying.
- Apply a small amount and allow it to penetrate well.
- Regular maintenance (every 6–12 months) extends the lifespan of the runners and prevents renewed squeaking.
Additionally, I recommend checking the runners for wear: a bent or heavily worn part can be resolved by adjustment or replacement parts from the manufacturer.
This approach may be more labor-intensive but ensures a quiet and functional system in the long term—also supporting sustainable use.
