Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Billy bookshelf: the drawer slides start squeaking when opening and closing. The noise is quite annoying, especially since the drawers are used several times a day. I have already checked to make sure nothing is sticking, and the rails donât seem to be bent. Are there any proven tips or methods to silence the drawer slides without affecting the smooth operation or safety of the drawers? Maybe some advice on suitable lubricants or maintenance? Thanks in advance for your tips!

I did find some lubricant on the guides, but probably too little or the wrong kind. I checked the screws, and they are secure. About the powder: that sounds interestingâ is it reliable for the long term or more of an emergency solution? And regarding the PTFE spray: can I safely apply it directly to the rollers, or is it better to only spray the tracks? One more question: is there anything to watch out for when removing and reinserting the drawers to avoid damage?

Have you checked if maybe a screw is loose or if the rail is slightly warped? I can only confirm that! Mechanical stresses on the guide often cause squeaking noises. One more tip for removing the drawer: For BILLY shelves with metal telescopic runners, there is often a small latch or lock on the side of the rail that needs to be released beforehand.
I recommend carefully pulling the drawer out completely and then releasing the clips on both sides simultaneously or in the correct sequence; otherwise, the runner can be damaged. If you like, I can gladly provide you with a detailed step-by-step guide on how to do this safely. That way, you can easily clean and re-lubricate the runners.
Regarding lubricants: PTFE spray is highly recommended, especially for metal-plastic combinations. Baby powder is more of a temporary fix and loses effectiveness due to moisture but works well for the meantime.
Wow, what a great technical discussion here! 🙂 I agree with all the tips, Iâve also dealt with a squeaky BILLY drawer before. My advice: be patient and try out the little tricks! Whether using silicone, PTFE, or powder â the important thing is to open and close the drawer completely several times afterward. This distributes the lubricant and ensures smooth operation. Itâs a small success when the noise finally stops 😉 Good luck!
