Hello everyone,

I have a Billy shelf unit from IKEA with doors, and lately the hinges have been squeaking loudly when opening and closing. My specific question is: What is the best way to lubricate these door hinges to permanently stop the squeaking without damaging the mechanism or the wood? Are there any special care instructions for this type of hinge or any oils that should be avoided? So far, I have seen silicone and graphite sprays, but I am not sure if they are safe for the materials.

Thanks for your advice!

Did you use any specific cleaning agents or has the door been oiled repeatedly without effect?

Thank you for the detailed step-by-step instructions!

So far, I have only tried spraying silicone spray on the hinges because I was looking for a quick solution. Unfortunately, the effect only lasted a few days each time. I haven’t cleaned them systematically yet, just roughly dusted them with a dry cloth.

I have heard of using sewing machine oil but never tried it. Are there any tips on the correct amount to use so that the oil doesn’t get on the surface? And do you recommend removing the door completely for this, or can I access the hinges easily enough without taking the door off?

Use the oil very sparingly. It’s best to apply a drop into the hinge joint using a needle or toothpick. Wipe off any excess immediately with a cloth.

It’s best to remove the door. This way, you can work cleanly, clean better, and apply the oil more evenly. This helps avoid accidental stains on the wood.

I am very familiar with the squeaking in BILLY doors. It can be really annoying, especially when you want to get rid of it permanently.

For BILLY hinges, a light WD-40 or a special furniture lubricant works best.

In the long run, I wasn’t convinced by WD-40 because it dries out quickly and the squeaking returns.

What I would recommend to a beginner is to proceed patiently and carefully, clean the hinge area thoroughly beforehand, and not just spray it on randomly.

Sometimes a small repair like this takes a bit of time, but it’s worth it. 🙂 Once you find the right method, the quietness is guaranteed for a long time.

If you don’t have access to sewing machine oil, you can use a thin, food-grade mineral oil instead – it is odorless and lubricates well.

It is important that the oil is not too viscous, otherwise residues may remain.

Silicone spray can provide temporary relief but often attracts dust

I just wanted to underline this again. Silicone attracts dirt.

From my point of view, sewing machine oil is the best option.
