Hello everyone, I have a BILLY bookcase with doors, but the doors keep falling off, especially when I open or close them. The hinges seem intact, and the dowels appear to be correctly installed, but the connection does not hold permanently. I’m interested in how to better secure the doors without making major modifications to the furniture, preferably using simple methods or common solutions. Are there any specific tips or retrofit options that have proven effective in preventing the doors of BILLY bookcases from falling off or sagging over time? Thank you in advance!

One point often overlooked here: Has it been checked whether the shelf is truly level and plumb, and not under any stress?
Thanks for the tip, that doesn’t surprise me, but I’m quite confident the shelf is installed flat. Is it actually practical or possible to replace the hinges with different models if the problem persists? Are there recommendations for sturdier hinges that can be purchased without compromising the original design?

Basically, the original BILLY hinges can be replaced with more durable versions. Hinges with reinforced spring mechanisms and screws with a larger thread diameter are recommended, but always with the same dimensions so they fit the existing drill holes. For retrofitting, I suggest the following procedure: 1) Remove the doors with the original hinges. 2) Repair the holes with wood filler or wooden dowels. 3) Screw in and install the new hinges. Make sure the hinge stop is properly adjusted so the doors hang correctly and do not get misaligned.

If nothing else works, small safety pins can also be a practical solution. Carefully drill small holes at the top of the door and shelf frame parts, then insert suitable pins or metal pins that secure the door without significantly affecting its appearance. This effectively prevents the doors from accidentally popping out.

That’s definitely good advice, I will take another close look at the hinge adjustments.

That sounds a bit invasive, but if it helps, at least it’s an option. However, I’m hesitant to drill unnecessarily into the shelving unit.

Thanks to everyone so far, the answers have been very helpful and give me a good direction on how to approach the problem. I’ll start by checking with screws, try wood filler, and then carefully inspect the hinge alignment. If none of that works, I will take a closer look at retrofit options.
