ᐅ BILLY Shelf Doors Keep Opening – Investigating the Causes

Hello everyone, I have a rather unusual problem with my Billy shelf unit from IKEA: the doors keep opening by themselves without me touching them or anyone being nearby. The doors are properly installed and actually close quite flush, yet after a short time they start to slightly lift or swing open.

I have already considered possible causes like an uneven floor, warped doors, or missing magnetic catches, but I can’t really pinpoint the reason. I’m also not sure whether the cabinet itself is “moving” or if there is some internal tension.

Has anyone experienced something similar or does anyone have an idea what might be causing this? I would appreciate any tips for troubleshooting and possible solutions. Thanks in advance!

I’m still curious about how much small misalignments during installation can affect things?

Quite a lot.

The hinges on BILLY doors are often adjustable along multiple axes (horizontal, vertical, depth). Even a horizontal misalignment of just a few millimeters can impact how the door closes.

For example, if the door is slightly tilted forward or backward, the weight acts differently on the hinge mechanism and may cause the door to pull itself open.

My recommendation: Make sure the cabinet is level, align the doors so they sit flush with the frame, and then carefully try adjusting the hinge screws once or twice. Usually, that’s enough to fix or at least greatly reduce the issue.

With furniture that isn’t stable enough, the total weight of the doors can cause small vibrations
is also a very good point—especially if you live in older buildings with uneven floors or a lot of movement.

If you decide against magnetic catches, try using self-adhesive rubber bumpers on the doors. They increase friction and prevent the doors from opening too easily.

In summary, doors opening by themselves are usually caused by a combination of slight misalignment, fabric or material tension, and the absence of a locking mechanism.

First, check the alignment with a spirit level, inspect the hinges and floor positioning, and then consider magnetic or mechanical locks. Especially with BILLY, retrofitting magnetic catches is the most common solution to achieve long-lasting stability.
