Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of having to disassemble a Billy bookshelf and would like to know how to do this as easily as possible and without causing any damage.

My main concern is safely removing the individual shelves and side panels so that I can transport the furniture in a space-saving way and later reassemble it.

Are there any special tips for IKEA Billy bookshelves, for example regarding the attachment of the back panel or the dowels, that I should be aware of?

I have some experience with furniture assembly, but I often get worried about breaking something during disassembly.

What are your best tips and perhaps recommendations for tools? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Thank you for the tips, it’s good to know about the mini connector clips—I’ll consider getting those as spare parts.

I will take your advice on handling the Minifix screws carefully.

One last question: If I don’t assemble the shelf for an extended period, what is the best way to store the loose parts to prevent loss and ensure everything fits when I’m ready to build?

In any case, collect all small parts like screws, wall plugs, minifix screws, and clips in small bags or containers and label them separately.

It’s best to place these containers on the larger shelves of your shelving unit to avoid losing anything and keep everything together.

If you feel uncertain during reassembly after some time, a small photo archive of each assembly step can be very helpful and prevent frustration. Good luck with it!

Store shelving components flat and dry, away from moisture. Collect screws in a small container and label it to avoid losing any.
