Hello everyone, I am planning to purchase a Billy shelf from IKEA and am currently focusing on the color selection. My specific question is: which of the available colors for the Billy shelf are considered especially durable and resistant to scratches, stains, and general everyday wear? I am particularly interested in which color has proven itself in long-term use, as the shelf will be placed in a heavily used living room. Any feedback based on experience with standard white, birch, dark brown, or custom painted versions is also appreciated. Thank you for your insights!

Good question about scratch resistance: white versus dark brown!

Here is a brief comparison:

- Both surfaces are melamine-coated and have essentially the same hardness.
- Scratches result from mechanical impact and are equally likely on both surfaces.
- The difference in sensitivity is mainly in visibility. Scratches on the white surface are usually noticed immediately because they appear darker than the surface.
- Dark surfaces visually conceal minor scratches better due to lower contrast, but they may show glossy scratch marks.

Conclusion: The coating is identical for both colors; the difference lies in how the damage is perceived.

If you often move heavy objects, using furniture gliders and handling with care is recommended.

I totally agree! I always say: the shelf itself remains just as sturdy, but on white, every scratch looks like a big stain – on black, you only notice it if you look closely. 🙂

My tip: if you don’t want to be polishing all the time, better to go for dark brown, as it’s more forgiving for everyday use.
