Hello everyone, I am planning to purchase a Billy shelf from IKEA and am currently focusing on the color selection. My specific question is: which of the available colors for the Billy shelf are considered especially durable and resistant to scratches, stains, and general everyday wear? I am particularly interested in which color has proven itself in long-term use, as the shelf will be placed in a heavily used living room. Any feedback based on experience with standard white, birch, dark brown, or custom painted versions is also appreciated. Thank you for your insights!

I really like this discussion! 🙂

I had the black Billy bookshelf in my apartment myself, and I have to say: the dark finish is very durable and still looks great even after years!

Especially when kids and pets are around, wear and tear is less noticeable on black surfaces. Of course, dust shows up more easily, but I happily consider that a reason to clean regularly. 🙂

So: If you want a sturdy, long-lasting shelf, go for the dark version—that’s my advice! Enjoy setting it up!

I would like to quickly suggest a small alternative: If you are considering custom colors, such as painted finishes or vinyl wraps, you should know that the quality can vary significantly. Professionally painted BILLY shelves can be quite durable, but DIY vinyl wraps or inexpensive paint coatings tend to wear quickly and are more prone to scratches and damage.

Sometimes the original is better.

Personally, I stick with the classic color options because of the warranty and proven quality.

For maximum durability: melamine-coated dark brown BILLY models.

Susceptibility to damage: low.

UV sensitivity: minimal.

Recommended for users with children or high traffic.

Especially when children and pets are involved, you notice less wear on black surfaces.

I can confirm that! I have two black BILLY shelves in my living room, and even though my cats occasionally jump on them, you can hardly see any scratches or signs of wear. The color holds up well and only shows slight fading in a few spots from sunlight exposure.

Interestingly, dust is visible, but that’s also a sign that the surface remains almost perfectly smooth 🙂

Here is a brief summary on choosing colors depending on the application:

1. White:
- Advantages: bright, modern, matches many interior styles
- Disadvantages: dirt shows quickly, scratches are visible

2. Dark brown (black-brown):
- Advantages: durable, visually less prone to scratches, does not darken significantly
- Disadvantages: dust is visible, slight UV fading

3. Birch veneer:
- Advantages: natural appearance, pleasant texture
- Disadvantages: sensitive surface, vulnerable to moisture and scratches

For heavy use, I clearly recommend dark brown or white in melamine-coated finish. Veneered BILLY shelves are more suitable for decorative, low-traffic areas.

Tip: Regular maintenance and gentle cleaning with mild agents protect any surface in the long term.

Thanks for the clear summary; it confirms some of my thoughts!
I’m also interested to know if anyone has reliable information about the scratch resistance of white versus black-brown? Are there noticeable differences in the surface that you can see with the naked eye or feel by touch?
