Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a Billy bookshelf from IKEA rather hastily, which I now regret because it is quite wobbly. It stands fairly well, but I’m concerned that it could become unstable over time, especially when I put books on it. My question is: What simple and effective methods are there to reinforce a BILLY bookshelf that was originally assembled carelessly, without having to completely disassemble it? Are there specific reinforcements, screw techniques, or accessories that could help improve its stability? I would appreciate concrete tips and experiences, as I want to avoid having to take the shelf apart and reassemble it from scratch. Thanks in advance!

Hi PUGELI,

“What are some simple and effective ways to stabilize a BILLY shelf that was originally assembled loosely?” – good question! 🙂

If you don’t want to take everything apart, often attaching the shelf to the wall helps. IKEA usually provides suitable brackets, but a simple metal bracket from a hardware store will work too. Additionally, you can try securing loose joints with wood glue or tightening the screws.

Sometimes the shelves tilt slightly – small spacer blocks or furniture glides placed under the shelf can help level it.

I once used extra-long screws and brackets myself, and since then it’s been rock solid 😉

Wall fastening is mandatory.

Additionally: retighten screws at joints if they are loose.

Place wooden supports or sturdy brackets in the corners for reinforcement.

To stabilize a carelessly assembled BILLY bookshelf, I recommend the following measures:

1. Wall attachment: A fundamental stability measure. Ensure that the supplied brackets are correctly positioned and securely tightened.

2. Check all screw connections: Tightening the fastening screws is essential, as they often loosen with improper assembly.

3. Use of wood glue: Applying wood glue at the joints can provide additional stability if they appear visibly separated or loose.

4. Additional reinforcements: Metal brackets in the inside corners can add further stability without dismantling the bookshelf.

5. Level placement: Positioning the bookshelf on an even surface is important, as gaps between the floor and the bookshelf can cause wobbling.

A complete disassembly and rebuild should only be necessary if there is structural damage or major errors in the initial assembly.

"Wall mounting is mandatory."

Thanks for the tip – I suspected that but hadn’t done it yet.

Do you think the original wall mounts from IKEA are sufficient, or would it be worth investing in sturdier brackets?

Also, is there anything important to consider when using wood glue? I have been using the shelf temporarily but haven’t fully loaded it yet, in case anything comes loose or requires fixing.

Basically, the IKEA wall brackets are functional but often quite small and made from thin metal.

For increased stability, I recommend using additional, stronger brackets from a hardware store, ideally with longer screws to better distribute the load. This makes the connection between the shelf and the wall much more secure.

Regarding wood glue: it must be allowed to dry thoroughly (at least 24 hours) and should only be applied to clean, dry wood. This is also important to know if you plan to disassemble the shelf later, as the glue can make disassembly more difficult.

If screws already show holes or start to turn, you can fill these with wood shavings and some glue, then reinsert the screws – this significantly improves their holding strength.
