Hello everyone,
I noticed that some shelves in my BILLY bookcase have swollen significantly and are already slightly warped due to moisture. The affected boards are those simple laminated wood panels, which seem to be quite vulnerable when exposed to moisture.
My question is: What are the effective ways to prevent or repair this kind of damage? I am thinking about both short-term repairs and long-lasting protective measures. Are there any specific products that have proven effective, or perhaps a better alternative to the original shelves for storing items in more humid environments? I would appreciate practical tips and experiences on how to restore the shelf’s stability and appearance without having to replace everything.
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hello paugu,
First of all, it is typical for the basic shelves from BILLY to swell in damp rooms because they are made of particleboard with a paper surface. Moisture can easily penetrate and cause these types of damage.
To provide a short-term solution, you can sand down the damaged boards if the swelling is only on the surface. After that, applying a thin protective layer of waterproof varnish or wood oil is recommended.
For a long-term solution, it is worth replacing the shelves with boards that have higher moisture resistance or sealing the exposed edges with silicone. Also, make sure the shelf is not placed too close to damp walls.
There are also special MDF boards with a melamine coating that are more water-resistant and suitable as replacements. It is important to identify and minimize the source of moisture as much as possible.
I hope this helps!

Moisture penetrates relatively easily and then causes these kinds of damages. That is correct. To add: BILLY shelves are mainly made of particleboard with a melamine finish, which are hardly moisture-resistant. Even slight water exposure can lead to swelling and structural damage.
Repairing damaged shelves is only possible to a limited extent. Sanding can improve unevenness but does not eliminate the structural damage.
It is recommended to fully replace the affected shelves with water-resistant alternatives, such as MDF boards with water-repellent coating or plywood panels.
For moisture protection, using vapor barriers behind the shelf and ensuring adequate ventilation also help. Additionally, applying edge protectors on exposed edges can minimize water exposure.
If the shelf is located in damp areas like kitchens or basements, I would generally advise choosing different materials.
Hello paugu and everyone!
A sagging BILLY shelf that’s leaking moisture is definitely no fun 😅. I’ve heard that the standard shelves are a bit like sponges – just without the cute disguise.
Jokes aside: If the damage isn’t too severe, a light sanding followed by a clear varnish or wood treatment oil can really work wonders. This will help protect the shelves from further water damage and improve their appearance.
If you want to replace the shelves, try using so-called water-resistant furniture-grade panels – they’re not cheap, but definitely more durable.
A small tip: Don’t place the shelf too close to damp walls and make sure there’s enough air circulation. And if it’s in the basement, consider using small dehumidifiers or airing out the room more often.
That way, your BILLY should hopefully stay drier and happier for longer! 🙂
