Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble a BILLY bookshelf from IKEA and am considering whether to use a cordless screwdriver for this. I have some experience with cordless screwdrivers, but especially with flat-pack furniture like the BILLY, which involves many screws and dowels, I am unsure if a cordless screwdriver really offers advantages or if it might cause some drawbacks.

I am particularly interested in whether a cordless screwdriver makes the assembly faster and easier, whether it could potentially damage the relatively thin wooden panels of the BILLY bookshelf (e.g., due to too much force or torque), and if there are any recommendations for the correct torque settings.

In short: What are the pros and cons of assembling the BILLY bookshelf with a cordless screwdriver based on your experience or knowledge?

Thanks in advance for your insights and tips!

Yes, it does.

It can happen if you use too much torque. Set it to a low level.

Usually, the lowest setting is enough. If you have one, it's better to do a small test on scrap wood.

I like to go into a bit of detail because it can really help when assembling the BILLY shelf.

First, regarding speed: A cordless screwdriver means you don’t have to turn screws manually, which is a real time saver, especially with a total of 12 to 14 screws per shelf. This becomes even more noticeable if you plan to assemble the shelf several times.

However, the BILLY shelf uses thin particleboard panels that are delicate. This means that if you apply too much force, screw holes can tear out or the surface can be damaged. Here, a torque screwdriver is literally key.

Most modern cordless screwdrivers have multiple torque settings. For a BILLY shelf, I recommend using the lowest or second-lowest setting. It’s best to test on a similar piece of wood to make sure the screw holds firmly without splitting the material.

The speed (revolutions per minute) should not be too high either, so you can control the screw well. It often helps to use a rigid bit holder in the screwdriver to ensure the screw goes in straight—otherwise, you risk damaging the screw hole or even the corners of the shelf panels.

Maybe of interest: While a cordless screwdriver can “over-tighten” and damage material, using it carefully is generally more precise and efficient than manual brute-force screwing. Also, keep the battery fully charged to maintain consistent power; otherwise, the screwdriver may slow down halfway through.

One more point on ergonomics: Cordless screwdrivers are lightweight and comfortable to hold, which reduces strain on your back when assembling multiple shelves. For this type of furniture, a cordless screwdriver is usually a great help if you set the power correctly.

That said, it’s important to consider whether you’re familiar with the tool, because otherwise problems can arise more quickly.

Hello Kautar,

I agree with glamo but would like to add some basic information.

A cordless screwdriver is a practical tool for many DIY enthusiasts, especially when assembling furniture repeatedly. For the BILLY shelf, the included dowels and screws are designed to be used manually or with a power tool.

The main advantage is saving time: the tedious screwing with a manual screwdriver is eliminated, and the screws are driven in securely but not too tightly.

The downside, as mentioned, is the risk of over-tightening or damaging the chipboard. That’s why I usually use the lowest torque setting (typically just under 10-15 Nm) and the slowest speed.

Additionally, I always recommend using the cordless screwdriver in two steps: first carefully insert the screw, then tighten it fully. It also doesn’t hurt to apply a little wood glue to the screws before driving them in to make the connection more durable.

If you’re unsure, it’s worthwhile to assemble the shelf piece by piece with the cordless screwdriver rather than driving in all the screws at once. This way, you can better ensure that all parts fit well and nothing warps.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask :-)
