Bogertrud20 Dec 2024 09:27Hello everyone,
I am about to assemble my new BILLY shelf from IKEA and am looking for good assembly photos or illustrated instructions that could help me visually. Although I have the official manual, I find some parts a bit confusing, especially the details around inserting the shelves and securing the unit to the wall.
My specific question is: Where can I find reliable, step-by-step assembly photos for the BILLY shelf that make it easier to follow the assembly process? Photos showing common difficulties or different assembly options would be especially helpful.
I appreciate any tips and thank you in advance!

Otherwise, forums and YouTube are good sources for photos and videos of the assembly process.

Photos showing common trouble spots or variations during assembly would be especially helpful. This is a very important point. When assembling the BILLY shelf, there are indeed several critical aspects to consider. For example, when inserting the shelves, it is essential to ensure that the small supports are placed precisely into the designated holes. Otherwise, they can slip under load. Also, for wall anchoring, it is advisable to select anchors and screws appropriate for the wall type – drywall, plaster, or brick all require different fasteners.
I recommend using video tutorials in addition to photos, as these usually demonstrate the movement and assembly process more dynamically. If you like, I can also provide you with specific tips, such as positioning the supports at various shelf heights or preventing tipping hazards. Could you tell me a bit about your location (wall type)? That would help.

The official instructions are available, but I find them somewhat confusing in parts,I know that well and would like to give you a brief overview of the best way to assemble the BILLY bookcase:
1. Check the package contents: Lay out all parts clearly.
2. Bottom supports and shelves: Use a small hammer to gently insert the brackets; they should fit flush and securely into the holes.
3. Fit the back panel: It needs to be straight and tight, otherwise the bookcase can quickly lose its shape.
4. Wall mounting: Use suitable anchors – different ones for concrete blocks than for drywall.
For assembly photos, I recommend checking the IKEA website, where you often find more than just the limited detail of the paper instructions. Alternatively, many DIY blogs and furniture-building communities post photos of individual assembly steps. It’s worth searching specifically for "BILLY bookcase assembly step-by-step photos."
Wow, this topic really hits home for me! 🙂 I just finished assembling my BILLY shelf, and I can only say: it’s great to have photos on hand because the small details can be quite frustrating.
In my case, it was a plain concrete wall, and I used exactly the screws IKEA recommended. While assembling, I carefully tightened each screw to make sure the shelf fits perfectly.
If you want, take it slow and go step by step – and don’t worry, it will work out! 🙂 You’ve got this!
