Hello everyone,
some time ago, I bought a BILLY shelf unit from IKEA, which I mainly use for my books and folders. Unfortunately, after multiple assemblies and disassemblies, some of the original screws have become worn out or slightly damaged. Therefore, I am looking for durable alternatives for the BILLY shelf screws that not only hold well but also stabilize the unit permanently.

I am particularly interested in solutions that are mechanically better suited and perhaps a bit more robust than the standard screws. Are there any proven screw types or materials you would recommend?

I don’t want to use just any universal screws, but specifically durable options tailored to the BILLY shelf that are easy to install without damaging the shelves or fittings.

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello Teore,

first of all, an important point: The original BILLY screws usually have a special thread designed to provide better holding power in chipboard. So, if you’re aiming for durable solutions, you should especially pay attention to the type of thread and the material.

From my own experience, I recommend screws made of stainless steel (A2 or better A4), as these are both corrosion-resistant and mechanically robust. The correct length is also important: screws that are too short don’t provide enough grip, while those that are too long may cause the wood to split.

A very good alternative are screws with finer threads designed specifically for chipboard, so-called “chipboard screws.” These reduce the risk of material breakage when tightening and offer better holding strength. It is essential to pre-drill the appropriate hole to avoid tension in the wood.

You should also consider the screw head type. A countersunk head with a cross-slot (Phillips) or Torx drive provides better grip while screwing in and prevents the screwdriver from slipping. Many people swear by Torx with shelving because it grips better.

Question for you: Have you already checked the material of the chipboard? Some versions of BILLY use different wood-based materials, which can influence the choice of screws.

Summary:
- Use stainless steel screws (A2/A4)
- Prefer chipboard screws with fine threads
- Choose the right length and head type (Torx recommended)
- Pre-drill if necessary to prevent wood splitting

I’m happy to provide examples and sources if you wish.

I can only agree with that. Use stainless steel chipboard screws with a Torx head in the appropriate length. Don’t forget to pre-drill to protect the wood.

Hello Teore,

I would like to add that besides choosing the right screws, a few other points are important to extend the durability of the fastenings on the BILLY shelf:

1. Use a high-quality screwdriver or drill with a torque wrench: Over-tightening can damage both the material and the screws.

2. Do not tighten the screws too much – this often causes the material to tear out.

3. Check the screws regularly for tightness and replace them immediately if they show any signs of wear.

4. If you frequently rebuild your shelf, it’s worthwhile to use small metal brackets or connector plates at especially stressed points to better distribute the load.

I agree – the quality difference in screws is bigger than many think. Cheap screws usually don’t last long.

If you’re still unsure about which screw sizes exactly fit, I can help you measure them. 🙂
