Hello everyone, I plan to reinforce my Billy bookshelf to make it more stable, especially because I want to load the upper shelves more heavily. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any official reinforcement kits from the manufacturer for the shelving units. My question is: What options are there to strengthen a Billy bookshelf permanently without major visual or structural changes? I am particularly interested in solutions that can be added easily without completely dismantling or altering the bookshelf. Does anyone have experience with additional reinforcements such as metal braces, brackets, special screws, or alternative materials? Thanks for your advice!

A small tip from personal experience: If you definitely want to install the plywood panel, use multiplex plywood with at least 6 mm (1/4 inch) thickness. It is quite sturdy and resists swelling fairly well. Also, drill small pilot holes from the start to avoid splitting the wood when screwing. 🙂

This works well if you also firmly secure the back panel tightly against the wall so that the shelf is practically framed.

In addition to the plywood panel, it should be noted that an extra crossbeam at the lower third of the shelf provides greater stability, especially for taller structures. This can be done independently of the back panel or metal brackets and particularly prevents the side walls from wobbling under load.

I think this could improve stability, but I’m unsure about possible stresses in the wood or the overall aesthetics.

Regarding stresses: since plywood tends to expand and contract less than solid wood panels, this should not be an issue. As for aesthetics: you might consider painting the panel to create a cozy look or even use it as a design feature. Alternatively, there are thinner rigid foam boards with wood decor that are lightweight and stable.

If you modify the back panel, make sure that it can still be securely attached to the wall. Otherwise, the additional board won’t be very useful.

Thanks to everyone for the detailed tips and clear explanations!

In summary, I will first install metal brackets, possibly reinforce the back panel with a thin plywood sheet, and securely screw the shelf to the wall. Additionally, I will reinforce the shelves with crossbars where I plan to place heavy loads.

If anyone has more tips later on, please feel free to share! Otherwise, I will get back to you once I have finished the installation.
