ᐅ Billy shelf wobbles despite floor underlay – possible causes?

LogozarHello everyone,
I have an IKEA Billy bookshelf that is standing on an underlay because my hardwood floor is a bit uneven. However, the shelf still wobbles slightly, which concerns me regarding its stability and the safety of the stored items.
I am wondering what could generally cause a Billy bookshelf to be unstable despite using an underlay. Could it be related to the assembly? Should I create more support points? Or are there other factors, such as the shelf height, the floor condition, or the material of the underlay?
I would appreciate any experience or advice, especially if someone has had similar issues and found a solution.
Best regards!

I’m wondering what the basic reasons could be if a Billy shelf isn’t stable even with an underlay.Hey, I know that feeling! Often, the classic issue is a poor connection between the underlay and the floor. Sometimes tiny air pockets get trapped, causing wobbling.
Even a slight unevenness in assembly can make a big difference in the height of something like a Billy shelf. Check how tight the screws are and whether your underlay material is truly non-slip – a sheepskin can be annoying too 😉
If you have something elastic like rubber or cork, that should help distribute pressure evenly and minimize slipping. Keep us updated!

what could basically cause a Billy shelf to be unstable despite having an underlayTo analyze this more precisely, it is first important to know the type of underlay – is it really level, well cushioning, and non-slip? The material your parquet floor is made of can also play a role, for example, whether it already slightly expands or contracts due to moisture or if there are unevenness in the millimeter range.
The wobbly standing can be caused by several factors:
1. Assembly quality: Screws, dowels, and joints should be fully tightened. Securely anchoring the unit to the wall with the supplied screws greatly helps the stability of the Billy shelf.
2. Base area and feet: Standard Billy shelves have relatively small feet. If the shelf is effectively supported only at a single point through the underlay, it can tip. In this case, felt pads or additional small shims can help to ensure all feet rest evenly on the floor.
3. Aging and material deformation: Wood-based materials can react to moisture. Even slight warping of the carcass or shelves affects the stability.
I would recommend first detaching the shelf completely from the wall, checking all screws, and then using a square to verify if the shelf is standing upright at right angles. After that, use a thin but not too soft underlay under the feet and then securely reattach it to the wall.
What is the width of the shelf? Is it only 80cm (31.5 inches) or a longer version? Furniture thermodynamics ;-)
Let me know which underlay you used, that would be important for further advice.

not stable despite an underlaySecurely install and always fix to the wall.
Possibly place an additional thin wooden board underneath.
Check the feet for wear or deformation.

Why is my Billy shelf wobbling despite having an underlay? The Billy shelf is quite prone to wobbling if the floor surface is not completely level. Even if you use an underlay designed to compensate for unevenness, it’s possible that the load on the end of the shelf is a bit too heavy or that the underlay does not provide enough cushioning.
First, try to set up the shelf so it is completely vertical and also secure it to the wall. Often, carefully retightening all the fastening points can help. The upper connections are especially important for stability.
Another tip: if your floor underlay is made from a material that is too soft (e.g. thin felt), this could cause slight wobbling. Better options are rubber or cork underlays, which can withstand pressure and provide slip resistance.
If it still wobbles after all this, placing a small, level wooden or plastic plate under the feet might help to increase the contact area and better compensate for unevenness.
What kind of underlay exactly are you using, Logozar? That would make the advice more precise.
