Hello everyone,
I am currently planning how to best use my Billy shelf for storing spare parts. It mainly involves small electronic components like resistors, capacitors, but also tools and smaller mechanical spare parts. The challenge is to have as much organization and quick access as possible without anything getting lost or mixed up.
Does anyone have experience with how to divide the shelves efficiently or whether it’s worth getting additional inserts or boxes? What types of subdivisions have you used for such items?
I’m really looking forward to tips on materials that are both durable and practical to handle. At the moment, I’m leaning towards small plastic boxes with compartments, but perhaps there are other clever solutions.
Thanks in advance for your support!

Hey Raneo, that’s great that you want to use the Billy shelf for spare parts! :-)
I did the same and can only recommend investing in stackable sorting boxes with small compartments. This gives you a great overview, and you can even take the boxes out if you need to access the shelves at the back.
There’s also a system with small labels that really helps because nothing is more annoying than searching forever for tiny screws!
It’s important not to overfill the boxes, or it will quickly become confusing. And if you have lots of small components, it’s best to use different boxes for electronics and mechanical parts so everything has its place. Good luck organizing, you’ve got this! 🙂

Hi Raneo,
I really like how you’re handling the Billy shelf – it’s almost like a little DIY adventure! 😄
One thing I think is great: you can also use small plastic containers or even wine bottle inserts if you want something a bit unusual. They fit perfectly and often have a great grid for organizing small parts. Additionally, you can line the shelves with thin felt or foam rubber to prevent the boxes from sliding around.
Sometimes a small magnetic strip on the side for tools does the trick too, so you always have something within easy reach.
Looking forward to more tips here 🙂

Hello Raneo,
I would like to offer a more detailed perspective on your issue, as I have tried several solutions myself.
The Billy shelf system is basically very flexible, thanks to the adjustable-height shelves. I recommend first considering how much space you need for frequently used items and what is accessed less often. For frequently used items, shallow, clear boxes that you place at the front are ideal. For less frequently accessed items, you can use larger containers positioned further back.
That’s a great tip! I have also created compartments with varying depths by installing narrow dividers. This helps keep things organized and prevents small parts from shifting or getting lost.
Another recommendation: use good labels, preferably waterproof and easy to read. This saves you time when searching. Color coding can also help with quick access.
If you have any questions about stability or materials, I’m happy to help!

Regarding storage for spare parts in the Billy: use flexible socket boxes with compartments. This way, you can customize the sections individually. Sorting boxes with transparent lids make it easier to keep an overview. If you have electronic components, it is advisable to use antistatic containers or boxes. Make sure to secure the shelves properly to prevent anything from slipping.
