ron-deo4323 Sep 2023 10:37Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy bookshelf from Ikea and noticed that the shelves come with this plastic protective strip, which is said to improve stability and prevent scratches. What I’m specifically interested in is whether the Billy bookshelf shelves with this plastic protection actually perform better in everyday use, especially regarding load-bearing capacity and durability.
I’ve heard from some people that the plastic strips are installed but don’t really help much because they come loose or don’t really increase stability. Others, however, report positive experiences.
Does anyone have longer-term experience with the plastic protective strips on Billy bookshelf shelves? I’m mostly asking about holding books or heavy items – does it really make a difference? Or can you skip the plastic protection altogether?
I’m looking forward to insights and preferably experiences from various users!

Hey ron-deo43!
It’s great to see you getting so involved with this topic! 🙂 I’ve had these plastic edge protectors on my Billy shelf for over two years now and can only share positive experiences.
They not only protect against scratches when moving the shelf, but I also feel that the shelves are more stable and don’t bend as easily — even when I put something heavy on them, like thick binder folders.
Sure, sometimes individual plastic strips come loose a bit, but most of the time they stick well, and I just reattach them or replace them. For the price, they are a great addition. So I can definitely recommend: give it a try! It might save you trouble later and extend the life of your shelves :-)

Hello ron-deo43,
Regarding your question about whether the plastic edge strips work on the Billy shelf panels: these strips mainly serve to protect the underside of the shelf from moisture and to reduce wood warping.
I would like to point out that the plastic strips do not provide direct reinforcement like metal braces or thicker shelves do – sagging mainly depends on the load and the shelf thickness.
For bookcases, especially with heavy books, I recommend loading the shelves properly and sliding them in fully. If you aim for maximum stability, you might want to consider stronger shelf panels.
The plastic strip is therefore useful, mainly for protection and minimal warping, but it only slightly improves load capacity.
I hope this helps!

Hello ron-deo43 and everyone else!
Great to see a discussion about seemingly simple but important everyday helpers like the Billy shelf starting here! 😄
That sums it up well! For me, the plastic edge protectors are like the little bodyguards of the shelves. They don’t turn the boards into super-strong structural heroes, but they do help keep the shelves a bit more stable in shape.
And honestly, the difference compared to a bare, unprotected shelf board is noticeable – you can see it in how the edges don’t constantly chip or swell when there’s some moisture in the air.
My recommendation: if you want to use your Billy shelf comfortably and for a long time, go for the edge protectors. The cost is minimal, and the effect is noticeable. And if there are any problems – Ikea’s exchange service is pretty convenient as well 👌
Looking forward to more opinions here 🙂

Hello everyone,
I would like to add a more detailed perspective to the discussion. The plastic edge protectors on Billy shelving board shelves are primarily designed to minimize direct contact between the wooden surface and potential sources of moisture, as well as to prevent minor surface damage.
From a technical standpoint, they do not provide any significant increase in load-bearing capacity or resistance to bending. The material properties of the shelf are not altered by the plastic strips; rather, they serve as a protective measure to maintain dimensional stability and surface condition.
For users who intend to load their Billy shelves with heavy items (e.g., many books or electronic devices), additional reinforcement measures such as adding center supports, using stronger shelf boards, or combining with metal frames are advisable.
The durability of the protective strips themselves is also worth noting: with frequent use, they may wear out, come loose, or shift. In such cases, it is recommended to reattach them or replace the strips as needed.
Overall, I view the plastic edge protectors as a useful addition that primarily helps preserve the value of the furniture without significantly altering its structural properties.
