Hello everyone, I have a serious problem with my Billy shelf: the screws keep coming loose after a short period of use. This causes the shelf to become unstable, and I have to keep tightening it. I usually use the original screws and tighten them with a regular screwdriver. Does anyone have tips or proven methods to permanently prevent the screws from loosening on a Billy shelf? I’m especially interested in whether there are specific types of screws, thread-locking compounds, or techniques that could help. Thanks!

I wrapped a bit of DIY workshop PTFE tape around all my screws. This keeps the screws tight and prevents them from loosening due to vibrations.

Hello Alfredo, it is important that the base is well prepared: if the screw holes become too large, the screw will lose grip. In that case, repair kits with wooden dowels or filler are helpful to stabilize the hole again. After that, the screw holds better. You can also apply wood glue, which provides stability once it has dried – but this should be used as a complement to mechanical fastening. Another important tip is to check and retighten the screws at intervals, especially during the first few weeks.

It is also important to use the right screws. Often, the original screws are intended for standard assembly, but there are screws with threads designed specifically for chipboard that provide better grip. Combined with an appropriate threadlocker, you can permanently minimize the problem.

If you decide to buy new screws, use chipboard screws. They provide significantly better grip compared to regular machine screws.

One more tip: If possible, install small metal brackets at the corners. This greatly improves stability and screws are less likely to loosen.

Thank you all for the valuable tips! I find the combination of thread-locking lacquer and suitable chipboard screws particularly interesting. I will also check whether the screw holes have become too large and, if necessary, repair them with wooden dowels. Thanks also for the suggestion regarding metal brackets; I could use those as additional reinforcement. I will share an update the next time I work on this 🙂
