Hello everyone, I am currently working on my Billy bookshelf and exploring the best ways to protect it from harmful environmental factors without changing its appearance or limiting its functionality. I am particularly interested in methods to protect the wood from moisture, UV radiation, and temperature fluctuations, as the bookshelf is located in a room that can sometimes be a bit humid and where direct daylight shines on it. What treatment options are available that sustainably stabilize the wood but do not cause strong gloss or color changes? Can you share any experiences with specific oils, varnishes, or care products that have proven effective for Billy bookshelves? Best regards!
Hey, cool question! 🙂 I once treated my Billy with linseed oil too—it makes the surface very durable and hardly changes the appearance. Just apply it generously, let it soak in well, and the wood immediately feels much higher quality. This protects it against moisture while allowing the wood to breathe, which really benefits its stability. And don’t worry about color changes; it stays pleasantly natural. 🌞 Pro tip: The oil has a bit of a smell but it evaporates quickly.
The most important aspect when treating a Billy shelf, besides choosing the right product, is surface preparation. A light intermediate sanding with fine sandpaper (around grit 220) provides a better adhesion base, especially if a stain or film has been applied previously.
Linseed oil is generally effective, but the drying time is longer. It is advisable to choose products with additives for mold protection and UV resistance, since Billy shelves are not designed for outdoor use and therefore have minimal lacquer protection.
For moisture protection, applying a wax-based sealant after the oil treatment can also be useful to protect the wood from swelling and shrinkage.

Thank you very much for the tips!
Are there any specific recommendations for such oils that are commonly available in specialty stores and have proven to be particularly reliable, basically a standard that suits a Billy bookshelf?
That sounds reasonable, but does that mean I would have to disassemble the bookshelf first? My Billy is already assembled and full of books.
I also want to avoid significantly changing the typical surface, which I actually like (so I don’t want a glossy finish). Are there differences between oils that I should consider? How about odors and drying times?
Looking forward to more advice!
