Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy bookshelf from Ikea and am currently facing the problem that the door does not close properly. The door is slightly misaligned, which makes closing difficult, and sometimes it also squeaks a bit.
Since I am not very experienced with DIY, I am looking for a simple guide or tips on how to easily adjust the door on Billy bookshelves—preferably in a way that beginners can follow easily.
It would be helpful to know the best approach, which tools are needed, and what to pay special attention to so that the door fits correctly and does not rub when closed.
Does anyone have experience or could explain step by step how I can fix this problem? Thanks in advance!

I tried adjusting the door a bit last night – and your tips actually worked surprisingly well!
One thing I noticed, though: the screws on the hinges are a bit stiff, and I’m worried about damaging something if I force them.
Is there anything I can do to make turning them easier, or is this normal for Billy shelves? Would it help to apply some silicone spray to the screws, or is that not recommended?
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Don’t worry, these screws are usually made of metal and are designed for adjustments.
However, if they are that stiff, a drop of penetrating oil (not sticky oil sprays!) can help. After that, the screw should move more easily.
If you feel too much resistance, it’s better to turn less by half a rotation and check more often.
Stay calm, you’ll manage! 🙂
I would like to add a practical piece of advice: Before you start adjusting, make sure that the assembly of the shelf itself is complete and done correctly.
Especially with Billy shelves, incorrect screws or loose connections in the frame often cause the door to hang unevenly or make it difficult to adjust properly.
That’s right! This is the only way to avoid mistakes.
And if the screws are stiff to turn, check for rust or debris in the threads that can be cleared out with compressed air or small cleaning tools.
Good luck with the fine-tuning!

Work slowly and check the fit of the door after each adjustment
