DapusinHello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy bookshelf from Ikea and am currently facing the problem that the door does not close properly. The door is slightly misaligned, which makes closing difficult, and sometimes it also squeaks a bit.
Since I am not very experienced with DIY, I am looking for a simple guide or tips on how to easily adjust the door on Billy bookshelves—preferably in a way that beginners can follow easily.
It would be helpful to know the best approach, which tools are needed, and what to pay special attention to so that the door fits correctly and does not rub when closed.
Does anyone have experience or could explain step by step how I can fix this problem? Thanks in advance!

Hi Dapusin,
first remove the door by loosening the hinges on the inside. Then check if the hinges can be adjusted. Billy shelves often have small screws for height and depth adjustments. Carefully adjust these until the door hangs straight. Finally, tighten the screws again and hang the door back.

Hello Dapusin,
I can relate to your situation well. The Billy shelf unit is quite simple, but doors can sometimes hang crooked during assembly.
First things first: you will need a Phillips screwdriver and possibly a small Allen key, depending on the type of hinges your shelf has.
Start by unhooking the door from the hinges. These are usually clip-on hinges, where you need to press a small plastic lever to release the door. After that, you can carefully adjust the hinge screws.
The height adjustment lets you align the door so it closes evenly at the top and bottom, while the depth adjustment ensures the door is flush with the shelf frame. Side adjustment is usually limited because the hinges are fixed to the shelf panel.
If the door squeaks, applying some silicone spray to the hinges can help—avoid oil-based lubricants because they attract dust.
If you want, I can also provide a step-by-step guide with more details. 🙂

First, remove the door by loosening the hinges on the inside. Thanks, that already helps me a lot. A quick question: On my shelf, I see two screws on the hinges. One seems to hold the door, and the other appears to be for adjustment?
Is there a specific order for loosening them? I want to avoid anything shifting or falling apart.

The adjustment for height and depth makes sense to me, but how much should you actually turn the screws? I’m worried about damaging something.
Hello Dapusin,
I’d like to summarize the main points for door adjustment on Billy shelves in a clear and structured way:
1. Removing the door: With the typical clip hinges, there is usually a small locking mechanism, often a plastic tab, that you need to press while slightly lifting the door. Generally, you don’t have to fully loosen any screws.
2. Adjustment screws: Billy shelves commonly have two screws on the hinges:
- One screw adjusts the door’s depth—allowing you to move the door closer to or further from the cabinet body.
- The other screw adjusts the height, so the door aligns flush at the top and bottom.
3. It’s recommended to make only small adjustments at a time (about a quarter-turn) to avoid damage.
4. For lubrication, commercially available silicone sprays work well. It doesn’t have to be a specialized furniture spray. The important thing is that it’s oil-free to prevent dust accumulation.
In general: work slowly and check the door fit after each adjustment until the desired fit is achieved.
I hope this helps you out.

Hey Dapusin, great that you’re working on this! 🙂
Adjusting the door is definitely doable, even without professional experience!
I did that with my Billy as well, super easy and much better afterward!
And don’t be afraid to make adjustments—as CHENFAR suggests, take small steps and test how the door fits in between, then you’ll definitely get it right.
Good luck, you’ve got this! 🙂
