Hello everyone, I recently used my Billy bookshelf and unfortunately noticed a few minor scratches on it. I’m interested in how you handle small scratches on these shelves. In particular, I’d like to know whether you tend to use repair kits, special wood repair markers, or perhaps household remedies. It would also be helpful to hear if minor scratches on Billy bookshelves can be easily fixed by yourself without risking bigger damage or noticeably affecting the appearance. In your opinion, are there any methods that have proven effective or specific products you prefer? Thanks for your tips and experiences!

I usually recommend using a suitable wood repair marker for minor scratches on Billy shelves. The application is simple, and the result generally looks quite neat.

Of course, that is an easy solution, but I wonder if it might just be masking the symptoms instead of addressing the underlying material issue. Billy bookcases are often made of particleboard with a veneer, and it is questionable whether these products are dependable over the long term or tend to require frequent touch-ups. Perhaps it is better to accept minor damage as part of the character rather than causing more effort with repair attempts?

Basically, the Billy shelf is made of particleboard with a melamine-coated surface. Small scratches usually affect only the coating. Repair sticks or kits meant for wood are not ideal for melamine, as they do not adhere properly. Repair kits designed specifically for coated furniture, which use wax or putty solutions, are more suitable.

It does look neat, but not all scratches can be effectively concealed. It’s best to polish the repaired area with a soft cloth afterward to achieve a more even sheen.

I wouldn’t consider minor scratches on Billy shelves to be a big deal. Often, you can quickly and effectively touch them up with a felt-tip pen in a similar color.

That’s amazing how effective a simple wood repair marker can be on Billy shelves! :-) I recently treated some minor scratches with such a marker, and they practically disappeared. Very important: don’t apply too much, or it will look unnatural. Then just wipe it with a soft cloth, and you’re done. Really a quick solution that works great! I think it really saves time and avoids having to replace the shelf 🙂
