Hello everyone,

I have a Billy shelf unit from IKEA that has developed some quite noticeable stains on the white surfaces. These are mainly dark marks from furniture glides, scratches with colored residue, and some smaller water rings in places. Despite regular cleaning with a damp cloth and mild dish soap, these stains are hardly removable.

My question is: Which cleaning methods or products are effective for removing heavy stains on a Billy shelf without damaging the surface? Are there any special care products or home remedies you would recommend?

It would also be important for me to know if there are differences in cleaning depending on the type of surface, as I understand some parts are only melamine-coated, while others may have a foil finish or be painted.

Thank you in advance for your experiences and tips!

Regarding stain removal on a Billy shelf, I recommend starting with a systematic approach.

1. Easily cleanable surfaces should be wiped with a microfiber cloth and clear water or a neutral cleaning agent.
2. Stubborn stains can be gently treated with isopropyl alcohol or spirits, as these solvents dissolve grease and do not damage the melamine surface.
3. For water stains, a sponge with some vinegar water can help, but you should immediately wipe again with clear water afterward.
4. Avoid using aggressive abrasive cleaners or steel wool, as they can dull or scratch the surface.

In general: Always test homemade remedies first on an inconspicuous spot.

Hello sacha,

To answer your question thoroughly, we should clarify some details about the surface of your Billy shelf. As you correctly noted, different models or product lines may have various material coatings that react differently to cleaning agents.

Billy shelves are usually coated with melamine resin, which provides a durable but not indestructible surface. For stubborn stains, I recommend the following steps:

- Step 1: Mechanical pre-treatment using a soft eraser (for example, one designed for felt-tip pens) can often remove initial discoloration.
- Step 2: Then carefully clean with a mild solvent like isopropanol or rubbing alcohol.
- Step 3: Using non-abrasive cleaning pads (such as melamine sponges) can help but should be applied gently to avoid damaging the surface.

Please note that for surfaces covered with foil, harsh solvents or abrasive cleaners should not be used, as they may dissolve or lift the foil. Watermarks usually appear due to moisture penetrating the structure; quick drying and occasional application of furniture wax can help seal the surface.

If you like, you can describe the type of stain in more detail (for example: how old the stains are, what color or substance you suspect). This will help provide more targeted advice.

Isopropanol is indeed effective. Simply apply it to a cloth and wipe the stains. Use only a small amount to avoid damaging the paint.

I find this topic interesting because I am currently facing the same problem and getting a bit frustrated.

Food residue and coffee stains have left quite noticeable marks on my Billy shelf. I have already tried dish soap and a sponge, but unfortunately with little effect.

I would like to know if common furniture cleaners, such as those based on citrus, are suitable or if they might be too harsh for the surface.

And sacha, have you ever tried how your stains react to melamine sponges? I’m a bit unsure if they might be too abrasive.

Furniture cleaners with a citrus base are often too harsh for Billy shelves, which are usually melamine-coated.

A neutral cleaner or a mild soap solution is better. For stubborn stains, glass cleaner can sometimes work well.
